Brave -- A Hit Or A Miss For Pixar And Disney?

There is such a Midas image about Pixar in the Hollywood business community that even when one of its films takes in $66.7 million -- as Brave did in its opening weekend-- the result is greeted with disappointment. The Hollywood Reporter cited a note to clients from Doug Creutz of Cowen & Co., who wrote, "While this was a fine performance in our view and assures Pixar of releasing another profitable film, we remain concerned that the creative direction of Pixar may be wobbling as Brave is now the second consecutive film to receive less-than-rave reviews." Noting that Disney paid $7.4 billion for Pixar in 2006, Creutz remarked that given "the importance of Pixar as an engine of creative content for the company, we take the risk of erosion of Pixar's creative greatness very seriously." Barton Crockett at Lazard's sent clients a note saying that the film "missed our ambitious outlook" of $81 million. Nevertheless, reports indicated that among the 13 films that Pixar has produced to date, Brave ranks as its fifth highest-grossing feature. Disney shares on Monday fell $1.7 million but had recovered most of those losses by mid-morning today (Tuesday).

The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Box Office Mojo (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date) 1. Brave, Disney, $66,323,594, (New); 2. Madagascar 3, Paramount/DreamWorks Animation, $19,712,315, 3 Wks. ($157,086,037); 3. Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, 20th Century Fox, $16,306,974, (New); 4.
