Brand: 'Sachs Calls Were Meaningless'

British comedian RUSSELL BRAND's controversial prank calls to actor ANDREW SACHS were censored before they were broadcast, according to the star.
During four calls, which were aired on Brand's BBC Radio 2 show on 18 October (08), he and fellow broadcaster Jonathan Ross recorded voicemail messages on Fawlty Towers star Sachs' answer machine, in which they discussed Brand's fling with the 78-year-old's granddaughter.
The pair also joked about breaking into his house and molesting him, although that dialogue was cut from the aired broadcast.
More than 40,000 complaints were lodged and Brand resigned over the storm.
But he has now revealed the un-edited calls were "more personal" than what was aired.
He says, “The thing was, we were told Andrew Sachs okayed it. Our producer called him and said, ‘Is it okay? Can we use it? Do you mind?’
“And he said, ‘Oh, yeah, but can you tone it down a bit?’ So we took out the more personal stuff.”
But despite the furore, Brand insists he would not change his controversial act.
He adds, “I can’t inhibit what is spontaneous and good about my performance. In a way it doesn’t change anything. I don't think anyone who listened to the thing and not complained will be affected by it. And the people who don’t like me will think, ‘Well, this is what we expected.’ So despite the fuss, essentially it’s meaningless.”
