Brad Pitt's $100k donation will boost the Human Rights Campaign's National Marriage Fund in its quest to ensure equal rights for homosexual marriages, according to The Sacramento Bee.

"It's unbelievable to me that people's lives and relationships are literally being voted on in a matter of days," Pitt wrote in an email going out Wednesday to supporters of the gay rights group. "In Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington, voters will go to the polls to decide if gay and lesbian couples -- our friends and neighbors -- are worthy of the same protections as everyone else." The nation's largest gay rights group announced on Wednesday (October 31) that Pitt agreed to match contributions from the group's members up to $100,000. Pitt isn't particular known for his philanthropic deeds, especially when it comes to party politics and political matters, but LGBT rights seem to be important to him, and he has shown the propensity to support them before: In 2008, he donated $100,000 to the effort to defeat California's Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage. The effort was unsuccessful, but that hasn't stopped him fighting the cause.

"There's not one of our campaigns that doesn't have additional needs," Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin, who sits on the board of Pitt's nonprofit housing foundation in New Orleans said. "Getting an email from Brad is something that gets people's attention at a time when everyone's inbox is incredibly crowded," he continued to The L.A Times.
