Box Office Doesn't Amount To A Hill Of Beans

04 March 2013
The bean counters didn't have many beans to count at the box office this weekend -- particularly when it came to Jack the Giant Slayer based on the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale. The movie, which cost $195 million to produce, took in just $28 million at the domestic box office (although it was doing considerably better overseas), according to studio estimates. The overall box office was down about 35 percent from the comparable week a year ago when Dr. Seuss's The Lorax opened with $70 million. This marked the sixth weekend in a row that the box office has fallen behind last year's, which got off to an unusually lively start. There was one bright spot on the list of top finishers, however. Identity Thief, the R-rated comedy starring Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman, took in about $9.7 million, pushing it past the $100-million mark in its fourth week to $107.4 million. It finished second. But Phantom, starring Ed Harris, which opened in about 2,000 theaters failed even to take in $1 million or to finish among the top ten.

The top ten films at the box office, according to weekend studio estimates from Box Office Mojo:
1. Jack the Giant Slayer, $28.01 million; 2. Identity Thief, $9.71 million; 3. 21 and Over, $9 million; 4. The Last Exorcism Part II, $8.03 million; 5. Snitch, $7.7 million; 6. Safe Haven, $6.3 million; 7. Escape From Planet Earth, $6.28 million; 8. Silver Linings Playbook, $5.94 million; 9. A Good Day to Die Hard, $4.5 million; 10. Dark Skies, $3.56 million.
