Box Office Recap: 'The Possession' Tops Whilst 'Lawless' Flops
The Possession has climbed to the top spot of this week's U.S Box office charts, reports The Daily Mail. Lawless failed to live up to hype.
The Possession has reached $17.7 million in North American ticket sales since Friday, and the figure is expected to reach $21.3 million on Monday, according to studio estimates. The new horror flick, which is based on a 'true' story, has performed well, and tops the last of the summer charts. Starring Kyra Sedgwick, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Madison Davenport, the film tells the story of a young girl who is possessed by a murderous, evil spirit. Sam Raimi, the producer behind the Spiderman trilogy, has described it as the Jewish answer to The Exorcist.
Another film with high expectations in the box office charts, 'Lawless', didn't reach the heights its cast and crew would have wanted. The Western gangster film, also based on real life events, couldn't beat the scares, and finished second behind the paranormal thriller. It appears not even its all-star cast of Shia Labeouf, Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman couldn't translate into the projected financial performance that was suggested. Lawless has also received a mixed bag of reviews, garnering a less than impressive 65 per cent aggregate score on Rottentomatoes.com. "Turns the Virginia hills of the early 1930s into just another backdrop for a clockwork succession of perfunctorily filmed showdowns and shootouts," said the Los Angeles Times reviewer, Robert Abele.
