Box Office Greener Than Expected

Movie theaters sold more tickets on Father's Day than studios had expected. Green Lantern , for example, raked in $53.17 million -- about $500,000 more than Warner Bros. had estimated on Sunday. Super 8 , which came in at No. 2, earned $21.47 million -- about $250,000 more than Paramount figured it had made. Same for Fox's Mr. Popper's Penguins, which profited prodigiously on Pater's Day with $18.45 million. (Actually, it was only a so-so debut, but the impulse to alliterate proved irresistible.) Nevertheless, the overall box office, which started out the summer as if it were going to make up for a disappointing winter and spring, dropped 23 percent behind the same weekend a year ago. (Of course, that was when Toy Story 3 opened with $110 million, Disney's biggest debut ever.) Particularly noticeable is the continued march of audiences away from theaters showing movies in 3D, with their attendant surcharges. 3D ticket sales accounted for only about 45 percent of Green Lantern 's gross. Even less for Kung Fu Panda 2 and Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides. As BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield noted on Monday, that implies that just one third of moviegoers chose to pay the surcharge to see those movies in 3D.

The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Box Office Mojo (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date) 1. Green Lantern, Warner Bros., $53,174,303, (New); 2. Super 8, Paramount, $21,472,020, 2 Wks. ($73,002,809); 3. Mr. Popper's Penguins, 20th Century Fox, $18,445,355, (New); 4. X-Men First Class, 20th Century Fox, $11,933,524, 3 Wks. ($120,358,086); 5. The Hangover II , Warner Bros., $10,071,339, 4 Wks. ($233,110,617); 6. Kung Fu Panda 2, Paramount, $9,027,671, 4 Wks. ($143,670,468); 7. Bridesmaids, Universal, $7,097,735, 6 Wks. ($136,450,725); 8. Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides , Disney, $6,646,249, 5 Wks. ($220,746,502); 9. Midnight in Paris , SPC, $4,884,800, 5 Wks. ($21,446,614); 10. Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer , Relativity Media, $2,103,465, 2 Wks. ($11,029,307).
