Bono's Hotel Plans Anger Locals
The singer has submitted new designs for the expansion of The Clarence Hotel to the city's planning authorities, which detail his hopes to build a glass dome on top of the existing structure, in what has been described as a "skycatcher" and a "white hovering halo".
But locals fear the modernisation of the hotel will dominate the surrounding area and overshadow neighbouring Georgian buildings, which An Taisce - the country's most influential environmental authority - claims are "individually unremarkable but collectively superb - the essential Dublin, the frontispiece to the city and the nation".
Bono and The Edge bought The Clarence Hotel in 1992.
