Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan, Marilyn Manson On West Memphis Three Film Soundtrack

04 December 2012

Arkansas teenagers Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, Jr. were found guilty of the 1993 murder of three boy scouts, but a star-studded campaign and an investigation funded by Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson led to their release last year (11).

Now the artists who fought for their exoneration have contributed to an album called West of Memphis: Voices For Justice, the soundtrack to filmmaker Amy Berg's movie about the trial and conviction of the trio.

Johnny Depp's band Tonto's Giant Nuts, Eddie Vedder, Dave Navarro, Natalie Maines and Henry Rollins appear on the collaborative album, which also features the original score which Nick Cave and Warren Ellis composed for Berg's film West of Memphis.

In a statement, Echols, who also produced the documentary, says, "Music has always played a huge role in my life. In my early years, it allowed me to escape the crushing poverty I was born into. Music took me out of myself and into a thousand other worlds. Then, when I was put on trial, it was music they used against me. My love of heavy metal was considered 'proof' that I was evil and a satanic murderer. And then, ultimately, it was music that helped to free me when friends and supporters came together to put on the Voices for Justice (benefit) concert in Little Rock."

The album is due for release on 15 January (13) and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the West Memphis Three.

Here's info on the West Memphis Three case. There are two sides to the West Memphis Three case. The movies about the West Memphis Three present the side of the defendants. They were found guilty by a unanimous jury the first time and then plead guilty last year instead of waiting for a trial. One reason they were found guilty was because of their repeated confessions and statements. Misskelley confessed FIVE times, three times to the detectives, once to the police and once to his own lawyer. Echols went around saying he committed the crimes to at least three different people after the crimes were committed. All of the West Memphis three had failed alibis. Echols' journal contained morbid images and references to dead children. Echols' stated under cross-examination that he was interested in the occult. The police took a necklace from Echols when he was arrested. An outside crime lab later found blood from two distinct DNA sources on the necklace. One source was consistent with Echols himself. The second source was consistent with both victim Steven Branch and co-defendant Baldwin. A car load of people saw Echols in muddy clothes near the crime scene. Echols had a history of threats of violence, violence, psychiatric treatment and psychotic behavior. His reported actions included brutally killing a dog, starting fires at his school, threatening to kill his teachers and parents and stating he liked to drink blood. See court documents exhibit 500 for evidence of this. for the other side of the story see wm3truth com
