Bob Dylan To Be Awarded France's Highest Honour, The Legion d'Honneur

Bob Dylan looks set to be awarded the Legion d'Honneur, the highest award offered by the French people, with the singer officially added to the final list of nominees to be handed the award. The award will be the one billionth award of his illustrious career (we think), and fitting decoration for one of music's most influential personalities.

Grand Chancellor Jean-Louis Georgelin told French daily Le Monde that Dylan had been officially selected for the award on Sunday (June 2), although he went to mention that the nomination had previously been thrown out because of an unspecified "controversy" among the council members. It is believed that his open drug use and stern opposition to the Vietnam War may have cost him the vote, however the council had a change of heart and decided o put the 'Blowing in the Wind' singer up for the top honour.

Georgelin described Dylan as an "exceptional artist" known throughout the world as a "tremendous singer and great poet," and would be a fitting honouree. In spite of the 'controversy' surrounding his vote, Dylan now looks like the front runner for the award and will join the lives of Michael Schumacher, Ralph Lauren and J. K. Rowling as one of the many foreign, non-military affiliated honourees.

If Dylan is chosen for the Legion d'Honneur, he would become the third musician to be bestowed with the award, following the footsteps of one time ex-Beatle (and once regular drug-user) Paul McCartney and French singer Charles Aznavour. Dylan was given the United States top civilian honour, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in May 2012.
