Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan Criticised For Keeping Quiet Over Ai's Detention

Folk legend Bob Dylan has come under fire for failing to speak out about the detention of artist and activist Ai Weiwei during his visit to China.
The rocker, who is known for his protest songs, dropped his peace anthems from his set in Beijing on Wednesday (06Apr11) to avoid offending officials in the Communist nation. He only spoke to introduce his band at the end of the concert, his first ever in the country.
Human rights activists have now accused Dylan of betraying Ai by not addressing his controversial arrest at Beijing airport on Sunday (03Apr11).
Brad Adams of Human Rights Watch says, "It's shocking to see him collude in this kind of censorship. Back in the day, if he had been in Ai's shoes, he would have expected someone to speak up for him. What does he have to lose?"
Authorities have refused to explain Ai's disappearance, which is believed to be part of a crackdown on critics of the government.
Dylan, who is due to perform in Shanghai on Friday (08Apr11), has not been giving interviews while touring China.

Back in the day Bob would doubtless have recorded a suitable song.......but that was then and this is now. It`s time someone else put their personal freedom on the line as he showed how......I`ve always thought of Dylan as having been well raised, he`s paid his dues to all manner of causes and it`s about time folk let him off the hook. Bob Dylan has done more than any other in his field to bring issues to our attention but this doesn t put him at our command. Let the guy get on with his job and stop telling him how to do it!

Bob Dylan is a man only a few weeks away from his 70th birthday. He is a guest in China. While I don't agree with what the Chinese have done, I also disagree with the attitude of these human rights activists. I know that if a band from China was performing in the United States, and members of that band were to criticize us for something that they didn't like, I wouldn't like it. And most Americans wouldn't either. It's what you call GOOD MANNERS.

I do agree with the MCJ comments ... I'm certain that Mr. Bob is making all kinds of interventions in his own way to pacify the world. If only music, which he is, too say the least, utmostly talented; it could also means being in China and delivering a subtil message to the youth of China. He is, as MCJ stated, almost 70, he's been around (the least we can say), and his life is linked to music, not to protest songs which were identifying to a specific era .... His talent is far beyond that and speaking of prisoners, he has been the prisoner of his own icone, isn't that enough, if I may add, on a personal level?
