Blur To Close 2012 London Olympics With Hyde Park Concert

Blur will close the 2012 London Olympics with a huge concert in the city's Hyde Park, headlining above other groups New Order and The Specials - reports Reuters - with many expecting more names to be added to the bill at a later date. The news was revealed last night with a poster for the event based loosely around the artwork for the London four-piece's first single 'She's So High,' showing as it does a man riding a hippo in an echo of the somewhat racier image of a naked woman reclining on top of a hippo which featured on the 7" released back in 1990.

Yesterday it was widely reported that Blur's Graham Coxon and Damon Albarn had played a new song at the weekend as part of the War Child charity concert, a stripped down piano and acoustic guitar affair named 'Under The Westway.' This latest announcement means that the group now look set for their busiest year since their first comeback from hiatus in 2009 during which they headlined Glastonbury and T In The Park as well as performing in London, again at Hyde Park. A single followed for Record Store Day in April 2010 but then they went quiet again, though the rumours that they'd continue didn't.

Naysayers may suggest that putting together ageing acts that'd have previously disbanded or gone on hiatus might not really be a fine representation of what British music is like in 2012, but with the likes of Pulp, At The Drive-IN, The Stone Roses and even Cast, The Happy Mondays and Dodgy all rolling around at the moment it seems like the obsession with 90s nostalgia is far from done yet.
