Bjork - Bjork: 'Russian Punks Case Highlights Flawed Laws'

Singer/songwriter Bjork is convinced the jailing of Russian punks Pussy Riot has opened the world's eyes to the "ridiculous, out of date" laws in the former Soviet Union.

Two members of the all-girl collective - Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alekhina - are serving two years in prison for performing a protest song against President Vladimir Putin at a cathedral in Moscow in February (12).

The case sparked outrage in the West, and stars including Sir Paul MCCartney, Madonna and Sting all called for Russian officials to free the pair.

Icelandic singer Bjork was one of the most vocal campaigners for the women's release, and even though they have since been transported to barren, remote prison camps to carry out their sentence, she is adamant the case has highlighted how Russian citizens are treated.

She tells British magazine Radar, "I guess that's the age we live in with globalisation and the Internet. Some things that are actually quite precious get ironed out but the other things that are corrupt pop to the surface and just look ridiculous. Or out of date, like some fossil... I guess they (the Russian authorities) made the sentence milder.

"I'm always just hopeful... I guess they were too proud to let the world control them this time around, but next time around, they understand that it's a different world out there. And Pussy Riot gave them a platform to speak out, all these people."
