Brumfield was facing a murder charge for the killing of her best friend's daughter, but she was found not guilty of first-degree murder and of child-abuse charges. Throughout the trial, Billy Bob's daughter continuously maintained that the baby-girl was attempting to climb out of her playpen when she fell to her death. The defence suggested that it was "impossible" for a child to sustain such horrific injuries from falling such a short distance. 1-year-old Olivia was found to have a half-inch fracture at the back of her skull as well as bleeding and swelling of the brain. The verdict was handed down on Friday (29th May 2011), with Brumfield expected to be sentenced in July. Amanda is Thornton's eldest child from his marriage to Melissa Lee Gatlin. After divorcing Gatlin, the Oscar-nominated actor went on to marry actress Cynda Williams, the playboy model Pietra Dawn Cherniak, actress Laura Dern and Angelina Jolie.

Billy Bob Thornton's daughter was found guilty in the same courtroom where Casey Anthony is being tried for the death of her daughter. The case has attracted national attention and is expected to drag on for several months.
