Bill Nighy Stunned By London Poverty Crisis

Actor Bill Nighy has urged the British government to create better social equality after witnessing the plight of hundreds of Londoners living in poverty.

The Love Actually star recently volunteered at a food bank in the affluent area of Fulham in the U.K. capital, and he was stunned by the amount of locals receiving handouts as a result of the global recession.

He tells Britain's Daily Mirror, "It's shocking. It feels like something from the Victorian era. This isn't how people should be living in modern times. You don't associate this area with poverty yet 36 per cent are living below the poverty line.

"Some had good businesses until the banking disaster. Now they don't have enough food. These are people relying on food donated by the public for a square meal."

And the actor has urged Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron to implement a new tax on the country's top earners to even out the country's wealth.

Nighy adds, "Nationwide, 13 million people are living in poverty. I didn't know until today that half of them have a job. They pay tax. Yet lots of wealthy companies and individuals are not paying taxes.

"And a tax on banks could generate £20 billion a year. The cuts are really a way of not taxing the banks. If David Cameron wants to show that we really are all in this together, he needs to tell the City it is time they paid their fair share. Bankers' bonuses replaced by billions to help the poor."
