Bill Murray - Bill Murray carries the critically panned Hyde Park on Hudson

Bill Murray has been praised for portrayal of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The veteran actor plays the late American president in director Roger Michell's 'Hyde Park on Hudson', which explores his relationship with his distant cousin Margaret 'Daisy' Suckley (Laura Linney) and - as mentioned in the film's title - his visit to London's Hyde Park in June 1939 after receiving an invitation from England's King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.

After missing out on several Oscars in the past for roles such as middle-aged actor Bob Harris in 'Lost in Translation' and weatherman Phil Connors in 'Groundhog Day' it is hoped that the 62-year-old actor will finally be awarded for 'Hyde Park on Hudson'.

The Wall Street Journal's Joe Morgenstern believes that Bill makes the film worth watching, writing: ''Actors are often unwilling, or unable, to articulate what they do when the lights go on and film rolls.

''In fact, Mr. Murray gives a fascinating performance, even though his [Franklin D. Roosevelt] was conceived and written as a fairly small guy at the center of a small film that, for all its considerable charm, miniaturises its hero in the process of humanising him.''

NewJersey.com's Stephen Whitty takes a similar view to Joe, noting: ''Murray is always great fun to watch, too, and he's best at the physicality of the part, pulling himself along with his hands, or greeting the day with his chin up and that cigarette holder exploding out of his mouth like a rocket.''

However, The Wrap's Alonso Duralde is one of the few critics who think it isn't Bill's best performance of his career and compares the hype surrounding the film similar to that of Daniel Day-Lewis's portrayal of President Abraham Lincoln in 'Lincoln', writing: ''Murray's portrayal of Roosevelt is neither extraordinary nor embarrassing.

''Even if this weren't a year when Daniel Day-Lewis's turn as Abraham Lincoln was thrilling audiences and critics alike, this performance wouldn't rank among Murray's most memorable work.''

'Hyde Park on Hudson' is due for release in the UK in February 2013.
