Disney bosses have another huge animated hit on their hands thanks to a large marshmallow-like superhero.

Big Hero 6 has rocketed to the top of the U.S. box office with an impressive $56.2 million (Gbp37.4 million) opening weekend.

The film kept director Christopher Nolan's sci-fi adventure Interstellar from claiming the top spot by $4 million (Gbp2.5 million).

Both films were well ahead of third-placed Gone Girl, which picked up a $6.1 million (Gbp4 million) ticket sales boost in its fifth week on release in America.

Horror film Ouija and Bill Murray's comedy St. Vincent round out the new top five.
