Big Drinkers To Go Thirsty At N.y. Theaters

Despite heavy opposition, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's effort to ban large sugar-sweetened drinks, particularly in movie theaters and fast-food restaurants, has been approved by the city's Board of Health. The ban applies to all drinks -- from sodas to so-called energy drinks -- sweetened with sugar and sold in cups larger than 16 ounces. The ban does not apply to diet drinks or those that include more than 70 percent fruit juice. "Six months from today," Bloomberg said on Twitter, "our city will be an even healthier place. NYC's new sugary drink policy is the single biggest step any gov't has taken to curb #obesity. It will help save lives." But Eliot Hoff, a spokesman for New Yorkers for Beverage Choices, said in a statement, "We will continue to voice our opposition to this ban and fight for the right of New Yorkers to make their own choices. And we will stand with the business owners who will be hurt by these arbitrary limitations."
