Beyonce Inspires One Billion Messages For World Humanitarian Day

The global superstar Beyonce has provided her biggest influence yet. Her music video I Was Here for the UN campaign generated one billion messages encouraging people to do a good deed. In possibly the biggest example of celebrity power, the former Destiny's Child singer has broken social media records, reports Times Live.

"The World Humanitarian Day 2012 campaign has made social media history by sharing more than one billion messages of hope," the UN said in a statement. The campaign is designed to increase the amount of good deeds done by ordinary people, and additionally, to give something back to those partaking humanitarian work. "World Humanitarian Day is a time to recognize those who face danger and adversity in order to help others." The boost of messages provided by Beyonce serves to prove the immense power of the Internet, and judging on this year's success, is something the UN will look to utilise in the future.

Beyonce isn't the only celebrity signed up to help the cause. Justin Bieber, Lady GaGa, President Barack Obama, Rihanna, Shakira, Jay Z, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin have all reportedly been enlisted to get the message across, the UN capitalising on the celebrities' desire to appear in the public eye, and it seems to be a win-win situation for all parties involved. "This is our time to leave our mark on the world and show that we were here and we care," Beyonce said in a statement.

"the UN capitalising on the celebrities' desire to appear in the public eye." This is a cynical and insulting remark. Perhaps the participating artist's desire is to use their celebrity for a good cause. How often do you see Chris Martin going out of his way to be in the publc eye when he's not working? You're assuming something not in evidence.
