Betty White Gets Standing Ovation At Sag Awards
BETTY WHITE, the 89-year-old American actress, beat a host of high-profile names to scoop the top award for her role in TV Land's hit show 'Hot in Cleveland', reports Yahoo News.
Also nominated for the prize was Edie Falco for her role as 'Jackie Peyton' in 'Nurse Jackie' and Tina Fey for the performances as 'Liz Lemon' in '30 Rock'. Jane Lynch was expected to be named the winner for her acclaimed role as 'Sue Sylvester' in Fox's Glee and 'Modern Family's' Sofia Vergara was also nominated. However, it was White's role as 'Elka Ostrovsky' that was regarded as this year's finest female comedy performance and the actress was visibly shocked when her name was read out. She received a standing ovation as she made her way to the stage and on receiving the award said, "I cannot believe this...they had to get the old broad up these stairs and that's not easy".
Elsewhere, Colin Firth was once again named 'Best Actor' for his role in British historical drama 'The Kings Speech' and Natalie Portman took home 'Best Actress' for her performance in Darren Aronofsky's 'Black Swan'.
