Bette Midler Replaced By Helen Mirren After Back Injury

Bette Midler has been replaced by British actress Helen Mirren on HBO's upcoming Phil Spector biopic, according to The Wrap. Midler was forced to pull out of the project last week after suffering a herniated disc.

Mirren will take-over the role of Linda Kenney Baden, one of Spector's defence attorneys during his high-profile trial for the murder of the aspiring actress Lana Clarkson. Al Pacino has already been cast as the record producer, while 'Arrested Developer' star Jeffrey Tambor will play attorney Bruce Cutler. The project hit another snag last week, after it emerged that friends of Clarkson had threatened to protest against the movie because of the way her murder is being portrayed. Writer and director David Memet reportedly told members of the press he doubted Spector's guilty and this is expected to be play out in the movie. The legendary producer was first charged with murder in 2007, but the trial ended with a hung jury. He was convicted in a re-trial in 2009 and is currently serving a sentence of 19 years to life.

Bette Midler hit the headlines last week after she doubted the originality of Lady GaGa's stage routine. She tweeted, "I'm not sure Lady Gaga knows that I've performed my mermaid in a wheelchair for millions of people - and many of them are still alive."

I am kind of shocked they are planning to portray Spector as being innocent. His driver testified that Spector came out of his house and said, "I think I just killed somebody." I watched both trials on Court TV. I don't know any of the parties personally, but I heard the testimony and if I was a juror, I would have found the jerk guilty, too. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I think it is quite heartless to express that opinion through the movie knowing how much it will hurt all of Lana's friends, family, and the public. Smh.

I can't believe how ignorant the director of the Phil Spector movie is. To portray spector being innocent in this movie is a crime in itself. And I can't believe Al Pacino and HBO would agree to something so vile. I personally knew someone who was held captive at gunpoint by Spector. Everyone that knew him knew it was only a matter of time before he killed someone. I didn't know Lana Clarkson but from everything I hear she was a beautiful woman inside and out. Shame on HBO and this moron director David Memet for having the audacity to portray Spector as being innocent of this horrendous crime... Duh, he came outside holding the guy saying to the limo driver I think I just killed someone... After the True Blood Season I am cancelling my HBO subscription if they go ahead with portraying Spector as innocent. It's one time when the justice system DID get a celebrity triial right!!!

I can't believe the ignorance of the director of the Phil Spector movie. And I am so disappointed that Al Pacino would agree to be in a film that would claim Spector was innocent of the shooting. I personally know someone that he pulled a gun and held captive. The man was fuckin insane and it was only a matter of time before he killed somebody. I thought it was great they were making a film but that sentiment changed when i heard they were planning to portray spector as innocent. Shame on Memet and the studio behind this. I didn't know Lara, but from what I read and heard, she seemed like a beautiful woman inside and out.
