Bernard Butler Honoured At Music Producers' Awards

by | 13 February 2009

Producer and former guitarist Bernard Butler has won the top prize at the Music Producers' Guild awards.

The ex-Suede member was named producer of the year and also took the Brit award for best producer.

Butler produced recent albums by Black Kids and Tricky, as well as masterminding the 60s-influenced sound for Duffy's debut Rockferry, the biggest selling album of 2008.

He took the MPG's highest accolade ahead Brian Eno - who produced Coldplay's Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends - and Steve Mac, who produced albums by Leona Lewis and Il Divo.

Eno was however awarded the MPG award for production innovation, ahead of Mark Ronson and Bjork.

Mercury prize winners Elbow took the best UK album prize for The Seldom Seen Kid while their anthemic hit One Day Like This was named best single.

Gnarls Barkley's Danger Mouse was named international producer of the year for his work with Gorillaz, Beck and Martina Topley-Bird while Calvin Harris took the best remixer award.

Paul Epworth was named best newcomer, having produced the likes of Kate Nash, Bloc Party and Florence and the Machine.

The awards were the first of their kind and coincided with the revival of the Brit awards' best producer prize.

"We hope this event will become an integral part of the music industry calendar for many years to come," said MPG chairman Mike Howlett.

"Audio professionals are positioned at the very heart of the music industry - we make the content that is the industry's product - and it is important that we are acknowledged as vital and key contributors."
