Ben Fired After Spark "Goes Out"

by | 21 May 2009

Ben Clarke has become the latest contestant to be booted off the BBC reality show The Apprentice.

The 22-year-old was given his marching orders by Sir Alan Sugar on Wednesday after his team were defeated in the latest task on the show, selling baby accessories.

Following the loss, Clarke was called back into the boardroom with fellow contestants Debra Barr and James McQuillan and was eventually dismissed despite trying to plead with Sir Alan to keep him and once again mentioning the fact he was offered an army scholarship at Sandhurst military academy.

"Don't start banging on about bloody Sandhurst again," Sir Alan responded.

"I was in the Jewish Lad's Brigade, Stamford Hill Division, but it didn't make me sell computers when I got older."

Sir Alan told the 22-year-old trainee stockbroker that he had initially seen a "bright light" of potential, but it had since gone out.

"You think quite a lot of yourself," Sir Alan continued.

"You over-hype yourself a little bit but at certain stages in this process I was seeing some quite bright light at the end of a long tunnel, but I feel that the light at the end of the tunnel has gone out quite frankly."

During the black cab interview at the end of the show, Clarke responded: "I didn't want to go this distance - I wanted to go the full way and I wanted to bloody well win it.

"I felt I could win it. I am still adamant that I am better than James, I am probably overall better than Debra as well."
