Ben Affleck - Ben Affleck Wins Big at the Director's Guild Awards Despite No Oscar Nomination
Ben Affleck as won the Director's Guild Award for Best Film, which marks the 5th major award win for that category, yet without an Oscar nomination for his Direction.
The Oscars, in some respect, may just have discredited themselves somewhat for seeing Ben Affleck left out of their nominations line up for Best Director for his self directed and self-starring Argo. So far he's won the Golden Globe Award, the St Louis Gateway Film Award, Broadcast Film Critics Association Award, and the San Diego Film Award, all for best Director. And now, to top that prestigious list off, he has also just been awarded the Director's Guild Award for best film.
Having been missed out for nominations for an Oscar for Argo, but having won the DGA actually puts him in very, very good company. The only other person to have won the DGA and not been nominated for the best direction Oscar was Steven Spielberg for The Color Purple. And that's the kinda company you want to keep.
As Rolling Stone quote him saying in his acceptance speech: "I don't think this makes me a real director, but I think this means I'm on my way." Well, grouped alongisde Spielberg we can safely say on his behalf, that yes, Affleck is a real director. Plus, it wont be all sorrows and woe at the Oscars as Argo is nominated in seven other categories including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Alan Arkin), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Chris Terrio). There should be at least one win in that bundle, so Affleck shouldn't be too put out.
