Beatles Bootlegger Spared Jail

LATEST: The British man convicted of trying to sell stolen BEATLES recordings was spared jail but given a two year supervision order today (14JUL06). NIGEL OLIVER was found guilty of two counts of handling stolen goods at London's Southwark Crown Court but Judge JEREMY MCMULLEN ruled he was unfit to plead. Judge MCMullen placed Oliver under medical supervision for his mental health and told the 55-year-old, "It is necessary for the protection of the public that you take advantage of medication and treatment and counselling that you are getting." Oliver - who acted as a middle man - was caught trying to sell tracks from the 1969 LET IT BE album for GBP250,000 ($450,000) in a police raid in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in 2003. NIGEL ASPINALL - who manages the ABBEY ROAD icons' Apple Corps label - told the court, "These tapes have huge commercial value. They've got over 80 hours or more of sound footage on them of the Beatles recording and chatting about stuff. "There's lots of very unknown stuff and music on there that they wouldn't have recorded in a normal session."
