Bbc Accused Of Anti-lesbian Jibes Against Lindsay Lohan

by | 06 January 2009

Human rights campaigners have accused the BBC of making "gratuitously sexist and homophobic remarks" about Lindsay Lohan and her girlfriend Samantha Ronson.

The celebrity lesbian couple were featured in BBC3's programme The Most Annoying People of 2008 with Radio 5's DJ Spoony and adult film star Ron Jeremy commenting on their relationship.

"Let the munters and mingers get each other," said DJ Spoony, real name Jonathan Joseph. "That's cool. No one really wants them ones."

Referring to Lohan and Ronson, he added: "But when they're hot and fit...do you know what I mean, and Hollywood superstars, they should be saved for guys like... not me ... for other guys."

Jeremy, meanwhile, made reference to wanting a sexual liaison with the young couple.

Peter Tatchell of the gay rights group OutRage! has hit out at the remarks, calling for DJ Spoony to be suspended from broadcast and forced to apologise.

"The remarks by BBC Radio 5 presenter DJ Spoony and straight US porn actor Ron Jeremy were gratuitously sexist and homophobic," he said.

"The BBC should have never broadcast them. The upcoming repeat [on January 7th] should bleep-out their stupid, bigoted remarks. A public apology is due from the BBC."

He went on: "DJ Spoony should be suspended by the BBC and be allowed to resume presenting his Radio 5 programme only after he has apologised on air and promised not to repeat his homophobic garbage."

Mr Tatchell added that Lohan and Ronson were a "lovely couple" whose inclusion in the list of annoying celebrities was "bizarre" and bordering on "lesbophobic".
