Berra enjoyed a 19-year career and was considered one of the best catchers in the sport. He spent the majority of his time playing for the New York Yankees, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972.

He was widely believed to have been the inspiration for beloved cartoon character Yogi Bear, and even attempted to sue the studio behind the program before later dropping the case.

Tributes for the sports star have poured in from the across the world, and Hollywood actor Samuel L. Jackson has led praise from the entertainment industry, writing in a post on, "Had some great times & laffs (laughs) with the legendary Yogi Berra. One of a kind! RIP Sir!"
