Bardot Fights To Ban Spanish Bullfighting
French film icon-turned-animal rights activist BRIGITTE BARDOT is campaigning to ban bullfighting in Spain.
The actress has appealed to the government of Catalonia to back The Popular Legislative Initiative - which calls for a change to the northeastern Spanish region's animal protection law.
At present, the law, which bans the killing or mistreating of animals, makes an exception in the case of bullfights.
And Bardot is now leading the opposition, blasting the sport as a form of torture.
In a letter to the Catalan Socialist Party (PSC), Bardot calls bullfighting "an incredibly sadistic spectacle" and refers to the PSC's current position as "an insult to the formidable popular campaign which has been observed in Catalonia".
The Initiative has gathered 180,000 signatures and is set to be examined by the regional parliament in Barcelona in mid-December (09). If the legislation is passed, Catalonia would become the first region of Spain to outlaw bullfighting.
