Barbra Streisand - Barbra Streisand Speaks Out Against U.s. Voter Id Laws

The Funny Girl singer/actress is not a fan of state legislation which demands residents produce valid photo ID cards before allowing them to vote, and like many critics of the scheme, she fears it will only present problems for the poor and the elderly as many of them do not possess the required documentation, which costs money to apply for, and will therefore not be able to vote in the upcoming Presidential elections.

The idea of the voter ID law is to prevent fraudulent votes being cast, but Streisand insists the legislation favoured by members of the Republican Party is not the way to go.

In a post on her website, she writes, "The new laws requiring US citizens to produce photo IDs at the poll are designed to deprive elderly and minority citizens of the precious right to cast their vote. These regressive laws are themselves the most dangerous voter fraud threatening American democracy."

Streisand, a registered Democrat, has also given fans the links to two websites which may be of help for anyone affected by the new laws.

She adds, "I would like to direct you to two key non-partisan organizations which may be able to help you protect your own right to vote or who can direct you in how you can help protect the endangered rights of others. There is a great need for concerned activist assistance."
