Barbra Streisand incurred the wrath of movie executives working on her planned film adaptation of hit Broadway musical Gypsy after recently revealing she wanted to cast Lady GaGa in the lead role.

The veteran entertainer has been working on and off on the project for years in a bid to take the beloved Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents stage show to the big screen, and plans began taking shape earlier this year (12) when Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes was brought on-board to pen the screenplay.

Streisand told Time magazine earlier this month (Dec12) she was keen to have the Poker Face hitmaker star in the movie musical, although she failed to go into any detail about it.

However, just the mention of Gaga and Gypsy in the same sentence has landed Streisand in trouble with Universal studio bosses, who had yet to begin talks with the singer about the possibility of taking on the role.

She tells Eonline.com blogger Marc Malkin she "got into trouble for mentioning" her ideal star, explaining, "It was an idea."

Streisand also played down rumours she was considering starring in and taking charge of the Gypsy remake, insisting, "I don't know if I would direct it. I'm not sure about that."

And the Funny Girl actress is still keeping her fingers crossed the project won't face any future stumbling blocks, adding, "I hope it comes to fruition."

Gypsy is based on the memoirs of burlesque dancer Gypsy Rose Lee.
