BARBARA BUSH, the daughter of former US President George Bush, has endorsed the cause of gay marriage.
BARBARA BUSH has become the latest high-profile Republican affiliate to support gay marriage, reports the UK's Guardian newspaper.
In a video for the Human Rights Campaign released today (1st February 2011), Bush announces, "I'm Barbara Bush and I'm a New Yorker for marriage equality. Everyone should have the right to marry the person that they love". Her father's vice-president DICk Cheney was also a long-time supporter of gay marriage, as is John MCCain's wife Cindy MCCain. Barbara's mother Laura Bush has also spoken of her support for same-sex marriage and last year she told Cnn, "When couples are committed to each other and love each other, they ought to have, I think, the same sorts of rights that everyone has".
Barbara's father George has always been thoroughly opposed to gay marriage and in 2004 and 2006 he proposed constitutional amendments in an attempt to ban it. Later in the human rights video, Barbara states, "New York is about fairness and equality and everyone should have the right to marry the person that they love. Join us".
