Axl Rose - Axl Rose Turns 50 Today, Celebrates With Roses Shows

Happy birthday to one Axl Rose, divisive rock front man and indeed currently only original man standing of hair metal giants GUNS N' ROSES, who celebrates his 50th today having given an early present to fans of the band last week by announcing that the 'Roses would be playing a six-date club tour in the States, including three dates in New York - making up for their non-appearance in the city last year on their 2011 tour.
Mtv reports that the tour will still only contain Rose as the original member of the rock troupe, with relations still evidently fractured between he and other pivotal cogs guitarist Slash and bassist Duff Mckagan. The three dates in New York start this Friday, February 10th, and include one at The Webster Hall - formerly known as The Ritz - where one of the group's best known shows occurred in 1998, something that they'd apparently not forgotten given that for the night the venue will revert to its original name, something that seems completely worthwhile.
Aged 50 the jury's out on whether Rose can still really cut it as a rock n' roll front man, since the release of 'Chinese Democracy' in 2008 live shows have been greeted by a mixture of delight and disappointment, with Rose famously showing up late to a number of his UK and Ireland shows during a 2010 world tour, on one occasion incurring the wrath of the UK's Leeds and Reading Festival organiser Melvin Benn who was punished for going over curfew as a result.

Is Axl Rose Really The World's Best Singer? 4222108 News

Axl Rose is infamous for many reasons. His constant late appearances, sometimes taking to the stage almost two hours after their billed start, means every recent Guns n’ Roses tour is dogged by disgruntled fans and a swathe of bad press. The singer is notorious for his cantankerous temperament which has resulted in numerous cancelled appearances and YouTube-worthy angry rants that would give even Kanye West’s irritable soliloquys a run for their money. He is so surrounded by criticism that it is no surprise the frontman’s vocal attributes are often overlooked.

Axl Rose Performing At The Hard Rock Hotel, Las VegasRose has posted a bashful response to the award of "World's Best Singer"

Now, the singer has been named as the best vocalist of all time on a recently published chart, an accolade that is extremely misleading given the nature of the basis for which the award has been meted out to the rock legend. The award is based on versatility in vocal range rather than any consideration for tone, grain or strength which are commonly considered as the most endearing vocal traits.

Yet the ageing rocker emerged as head of the pack, beating 76 other artists whose vocals were analysed, including the likes of Steven Tyler, Prince and Mariah Carey, who are all known to possess voices able to traverse multiple octaves with ease. It was Rose’s unique ability to hit the hallowed B Flat 6 note which he sings on ‘Ain’t It Fun’, a cover of a Dead Boys song from the band’s 1993 record The Spaghetti Incident, which tipped him to the position. Mariah Carey possesses the highest note on the chart, hitting an almost incomprehensible G 7 on her track ‘Emotions’, yet it is Rose’s ability to mine the deep bass notes as well as a shrill falsetto that led to his position as head of the pack.

Online commentators were quick to point out the misleading nature of the award and the lack of consideration toward any element other than vocal range. Nevertheless, Rose has responded to the praise with a reaction that many will see as uncharacteristic given the singer’s penchant for self-absorption and mindless hedonism. He stated: “It’s very flattering and humbling to be included in such an illustrious ensemble.” Rose was then asked his own choice of the best singers in music, the ensuing list was almost exclusively procured from the 60’s and 70’s, including the likes of Elvis Presley, Janice Joplin, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, James Brown and Freddie Mercury.

Rose signed off his statement with a rare use of self-deprecating humour, saying “I would rather hear ANY of them anytime rather than me!” he concluded. The rock mainstay is currently working on the follow up to the long-awaited comeback album Chinese Democracy, whilst the band are currently enjoying their second residency at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas.

Axl Rose Gives Opinion On Being Named 'World's Greatest Singer' 4218502 News

Rock's most controversial frontman, Axl Rose, gives his opinion on who is "The World's Greatest Singers."

The Guns N' Roses star's vocal abilities were recently named the best of all on an unscientific, but well liked, chart posted by ConcertHotels.com.

But as soon as the list went viral, many were quick to squash the notion that Axl is the world's greatest singer.

The site's untested & unreliable analysis suggested that the 52 year-old he had a range that spanned nearly seven octaves, beating the likes of Mariah Carey, Marvin Gaye and Prince, plus another 73 artist.

Although Axl found the recognition "very flattering and humbling," in a letter posted to Spin, he admitted that he wouldn't have put himself at No.1.

"Big thanks to all the fans and media for the props reacting to the Spin top vocalist's article," Rose's letter began.

"From what I could tell, the original article was for the most part only talking about the professionally recorded vocal range of the singers they compared calling the entire group 'The World's Greatest Singers.' It's very flattering and humbling to be included in such an illustrious ensemble," he wrote.

As for who the 'Welcome To The Jungle' singer would pick as the greatest, "I'd say first that I don't know there's a definitive answer as in my opinion it's subjective, and second that my focus is primarily rock singers," Rose added.

"That said, I enjoy Freddie Mercury, Elvis Presley, Paul McCartney, Dan McCafferty, Janice Joplin, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Roger Daltrey, Don Henley, Jeff Lynne, Johnny Cash, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Scott, Etta James, Fiona Apple, Chrissie Hynde, Stevie Wonder, James Brown and a ton of others (predominantly 70's rock singers) and would rather hear ANY of them anytime rather than me," the letter concluded. "Peace."

Fergie & Josh Duhamel Welcome A Little Boy, With Guns N' Roses-Inspired Name 3842408 News

Hip-hop singer Fergie may have made her name as part of pop group Black Eyed Peas but she's shown that rock music is where her heart lies, after collaborating with Slash and now has named her first born child after the guitarist's former band, Guns n' Roses.

Fergie Josh Duhamel

She and her actor husband, Josh Duhamel, had a baby yesterday (29th August) - a little boy who weighed 7 pounds 10 ounces. It takes some parents a few days to decide what they'll call their new bundle of joy but Fergie and Josh wasted no time in naming their son Axl Jack Duhamel, in honour of Guns n' Roses' notorious frontman, Axl Rose.

Fergie is a massive fan of the band, as evidenced by her covers of some of their greatest hits and a collaboration with the band's former guitarist Slash on his solo album. She also performed with Slash during Black Eyed Peas' 2011 Super Bowl half time show.

The 38 year-old 'Don't Phunk With My Heart' singer, who had three baby showers during her pregnancy, gave birth via a Caesarean, according to TMZ. She is currently recuperating in an L.A hospital's VIP suite not dissimilar from the one Kim Kardashian famously stayed in. Duhamel, a model, was said to be cool and calm throughout Fergie's childbirth, supporting his wife of four years in their life-changing experience.

Fergie and Josh excitedly announced the pregnancy back in February with an Instagram photo. "Josh & Me & BABY makes three!!! #mylovelybabybump," she titled the snap which showed two young children with a cat. The Scenic Route actor told the LA Times in the early stages of his wife's pregnancy that preparing to be a dad at 40 was "exciting." "I hear all my friends telling me about how fantastic it is and all the things that go along with being pregnant and the stages of it all. But until you're actually going through it you can't even relate," he said in March.

Fergie & Josh Duhamel Are Parents At Last! Say Hello To Baby Axl Jack! 3842083 News

Fergie is a mum at last, and Josh Duhamel a dad, as the singer gave birth to the couple's first child together this week. The new mother gave birth on Thursday, 29 August, at a Los Angeles hospital in the middle of the day, having arrived the Cedars Sinai Medical Center earlier that morning. Congratulations to the both of them!

The news of her birth was first revealed by TMZ, who also reported that the Black Eyed Peas singer (born Stacy Ferguson) gave birth via C-section and arrived at the hospital with her husband just as planned. The two had apparently been prepping for the big day for a while and arrived at their V.I.P. maternity suite thoroughly prepared for the child-birth and a stay at hospital after. The baby also reportedly arrived right on time too, coming just as doctors had predicted.

It has been reported that the new parents also took on the whole process admirably and had been thoroughly prepared for what to expect for a number of weeks. Duhamel was reportedly seen casually chatting with staff whilst his wife was prepped and made to feel at home in her glitzy birthing area; the same maternity unit used recently by Kim Kardashian and NBA star Dwight Howard.

Fergie's representatives spoke with TMZ following the birth, with the celebrity gossip site reporting that the baby's name, Axl Jack, was inspired by Guns & Roses frontman Axl Rose. The sweet child o' them was born at a healthy 7 pounds 10 ounces.

"Where's the love Axl?" Slash's Wife Disappointed by Axl Rose's Jimmy Kimmel Interview 3346216 News

In distinct contrast to his normal behaviour Axl Rose was a) on time and b) giving an interview, with Jimmy Kimmel. The Guns N' Roses front man hasn't given a live TV interview for 20 years, but now that he has a 12 date residency at The Joint at Hard Rock in Las Vegas is more than happy to do a little promo in aid of the performances.

Perla Hudson, the wife of ex-Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash, was disappointed by the interview and quipped about it in an interview with Us Weekly. She, like many other fans, was probably hoping for a more in-depth and revealing interview, rather than the brief and amusing chat with Kimmel that ultimately barely scratched the surface of Axl's interesting life and even more interesting psyche. "I was waiting for something enlightening and all I got was promotion for a show and his evident affinity for a chili burger," Hudson said.  "Where is the love Axl? And I stayed up for this? Sex, drugs and chili dogs. Long live Axl Rose. And a Halloween tree." Fixating on his weight, she said he has "evidently [had] way too many Tommy's chili burgers!" We can't disagree, he really is looking like a bit of a porker these days, in contrast to his high cheek boned and chiselled days of the early 90s.

Ah well, Axl turned 50 years old earlier this year, so gaining a few pounds is pretty much par for the course in middle age. In the interview he also expressed apathetic support for Obama, but that despite 'leaning' towards the Democrats, he won't be voting. A little odd given that his residency is titled "An Appetite For Democracy". Apathy, political contradictions and piling on the pounds, let's put it all down to creative licence. He's Axl Rose, he can do what he likes. The Guns N' Roses residency will begin on Wednesday 31st October 2012, with 11 futher days until November 24th of the same year.

Axl Rose On Jimmy Kimmel: First Interview In Two Decades, Gives Tickets Away 3343966 News

Axl Rose gave his first interview for 20 years on Jimmy Kimmel Live, and was kind enough to give the lucky audience some free tickets for his 12-date stint at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Gigwise reports.

"I think we got some tickets under the people's seats. There should be two sets of tickets if you reach under your seats," Rose told Kimmel, which lead an excited audience to delve under their seats to find, you guessed it, tickets. This was an incredibly rare appearance from Rose on television, and this was plain to see as the studio audience had to be calmed down by Kimmel when he entered the stage. His previous public outings have been shrouded in controversy, and his unpredictable personality has become somewhat of a USP, but Mr. Rose, now a family man, was calm and collected as he took to the couch circuit with consummate ease.

Two things are happening soon; the presidential election and Halloween, and Rose had more to say about he latter, admitting that he's a big fan of the holiday, and even has a "Halloween tree". We don't really understand what that is, but if Axl does it: it's cool. He also spoke on politics, but only to say if he were to vote, it would probably be for Obama, but that he's 'not really a voter'.

First TV Interview In 20 Years Sees Axl Rose Back President Obama 3343750 News

The normally grumpy Axl Rose seemed pretty cheerful indeed as he appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel Live! show, and as well he might! After all, this was the first televised interview the notorious front man of ageing rock and rollers Guns N’ Roses had given in more than 20 years. Rose was surprisingly smooth in the role as guest, and even kept his cheerful demeanour when Kimmel likened him to Santa Claus. That must be some sized dressing they’d put up for him backstage.

That said, Kimmel largely avoided the long, long list of things he could’ve asked Rose, such as, y’know, his embittered relationship with his former guitarist Slash, or his decision to reject his Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction and then subsequently apologise for his no show, nor indeed what Guns N’ Roses were planning next. Kimmel might as well have just asked him “So, Axl, how are you?” and have that be that.

However, he did take the ribbing he got well, and in a moment that really did make him seem like Santa Claus, he puts Guns N’ Roses tickets under certain audience members seats, as well bringing along a burger truck and giving everyone gift certificates! Oh, and the title of this story? It’s because he told Kimmel that he “would lean Obama” in the upcoming election, though he quantified this by saying that he and most of California tend not to vote. So there you go then, Axl Rose: not quite as monstrous as we thought. See for yourself below (complete with amusing Halloween anecdote):

The normally grumpy Axl Rose seemed pretty cheerful indeed as he appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel Live! show, and as well he might! After all, this was the first televised interview the notorious front man of ageing rock and rollers Guns N’ Roses had given in more than 20 years. Rose was surprisingly smooth in the role as guest, and even kept his cheerful demeanour when Kimmel likened him to Santa Claus. That must be some sized dressing they’d put up for him backstage.

Axl Rose Issues Cease And Desist Over Fan Exhibition 3302750 News

Axl Rose's legal team have demanded that a Los Angeles photographer cancel an art show inspired by the Guns N' Roses. Rose, who is pretty well-known for his difficulty (just ask, well, anyone) has had his lawyers fire off a cease and desist letter after discovering that snapper Laura London was showing an exhibition in Los Angeles called 'Once upon a time... Axl Rose was my neighbour.

The collection includes a photo of a garage door with 2Sweet Child O'Die you R 1 of many nothing special" spray-painted on it, as well as models dressed up in bandannas similar to the ones Rose famously sports. Lawyers for the star claim that the photographer alleges that it was Rose who wrote the graffiti, and have demanded that she close the exhibition completely and offer the rocker an apology.

In the letter, the lawyers write, "Mr. Rose never spray-painted anything. Your salacious and inflammatory statements are plainly designed to garner attention and line your pockets with money." London's website for the exhibition features the photograph, but has since removed a caption linking it to Rose, according to TMZ.com. There have been no changes in plans to open the show on Saturday (September 29th).

James Hetfield Respects Axl 2547488 News

Metallica singer James Hetfield admitted he now has a "kind of respect" for Axl Rose.

Tensions between the two singers ran high when Metallica and Axl's band, Guns N' Roses, toured the US together in 1992 - a situation exacerbated by James sustaining second and third degree burns during a date in Montreal, forcing Metallica to cut their set short.

Instead of then playing an extended show for fans, Axl claimed he had a sore throat and stormed offstage early, causing fans to riot and relations between Metallica and Guns N' Roses to break down.

However, with both bands back on the road separately this year, James admitted he has grown a respect for the uncompromising frontman - the only remaining original member of his band.

James told Sydney's Triple M radio station: "I've got nothing against Guns N' Roses. I mean, he's doing what he wants to do at this point. I don't know if there's much 'Guns' or 'Roses' in any of that, but its Axl, and he is Axl and he has not changed or waned one bit, and I kind of respect that."

During their 1992 tour together James famously slammed Axl's rider requirements on video, and wasn't surprised that little has changed in the 18 years since, when handed a recent copy of Guns 'N' Roses pre-show requirements.

He read out: "Champagne, vodka, tequila, red wine. He's got cheese on here and then jam and condiments. A bed! What does he do, sleep at the gig?"

Axl - who is renowned for taking to the stage late, often incurring the wrath of promoters and fines for his band, as well as tension between the crowd and his band - does indeed sleep before Guns N' Roses shows and does not take well to being woken up, as his team found out during a recent concert at England's Reading festival, when the band were an hour late onstage.

A source explained: "Axl has a very firm rule that he is not to be woken up whenever he is asleep. That proved costly at Reading.

"Axl was furious. He refused to take responsibility and blamed his team, so he sacked them."

However, this move left the band without a crew for their headlining slot at another festival a day later, meaning Axl had no option other than to continue employing them.
