It was clear that 'The Avengers' had sailed past the previous box-office record set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, though the phenomenal figure has since been amended - to become even bigger. Early reports had the superhero movie at $200.3 million for its opening weekend, but according to BoxOfficeMojo.com, over $7 million has been added to that figure.

The movie's revised $207.4 million obliterates the previous all-time weekend record, $169.9 million set by the Potter movie last year. It also became the fastest movie to reach $100 million, $150 million and $200 million and also sets new records for Saturday and Sunday grosses, with $69.6 million and $57.1 million respectively. And the record's don't' finish there, Joss Whedon's Marvel movie also secured the title of highest per-theater average takings for a nationwide release, with $47,698. The only record is didn't appear to take was that of biggest opening day, which still belongs to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. The Avengers grossed more in one weekend than previous comic book movies did in total, with Captain America: The First Avenger taking $176.6 million and The Incredible Hulk with $134.8 million. Iron Man and Iron Man 2 are still ahead with $318.4 million and $312.4 million, but the Avengers should comfortably beat both in the coming weeks.

The movie was given an added boost by unanimously strong reviews before its release, and it still holds a 94 per cent rating of the review aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes.
