Avengers Assemble: The Best Superhero Movie Ever?
Forget 'The Hunger Games', The Avengers could prove to be one of 2012's biggest movies after it received unanimous praise from critics. The film stars Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L Jackson, Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner teaming together to save the world.
The Daily Mirror's critic Mark Adams was perhaps most effusive in his praise for the action-romp, posting the question, ".Is Avengers Assemble the best superhero movie ever?", adding, ".In my book the Avengers team-up is a wonderfully fast and frantic bit of entertainment that will be pretty hard to top". Still holding a remarkable 97 per cent rating on the review aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes, the movie appears to have been warmly received by just about everyone. Justin Chang of Variety magazine commented, "Like a superior, state-of-the-art model built from reconstituted parts, Joss Whedon's buoyant, witty and robustly entertaining superhero smash-up is escapism of a sophisticated order", while James White of Empire magazine adds, "A joyous blend of heroism and humour that raises the stakes even as it maintains a firm grip on what makes the individual heroes tick". Though the critics have certainly enjoyed the film, it seems not everyone is so enamoured by all of the characters. Mark Ruffalo - who plays The Hulk - told the Press Association, "It totally freaked out my daughter when I turned into the Hulk. She jumped on my lap and said, 'Why do you want to kill that girl, Papa?".
It's turning out to be a hugely successful year for Joss Whedon, who also penned the recent horror flick 'The Cabin in the Woods', which again drew praise from critics. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone said, "If it's true that you always kill the thing you love, then horror honchos Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard have taken an ax to slasher cinema in The Cabin in the Woods and chopped it up for kindling".
