As Usual, Box Office Plummets In Last Week Of January

Paramount's retelling of the Hansel and Gretel tale, tricked out as an R-rated horror flick titled Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, took the lead at the box office over the weekend. But with only $19.7 million in the till, it will have to struggle to recoup the $50 million that it cost to produce. In its second week, Universal's Mama, another horror flick, but with a PG-13 rating, dropped a respectable 54 percent, to take second place with $13.1 million and bring its domestic total to $48.9 million. The sixth week of Sony's Zero Dark Thirty placed third with $9.7 million, just edging out the eleventh week of The Weinstein Co.'s Silver Linings Playbook with $9.4 million. Rounding out the top five was FilmDistrict's Parker, with an opening-week total of just $7 million. (The opening week of Relativity Media's Movie 43 had a worse fate, winding up with just $4.8 million.) Overall, the box office was down 11 percent from the comparable weekend a year ago when the opening of Open Road Films' The Grey led with $19.7 million.

The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Box Office Mojo (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date):
