Spanish artist Antoni Tapies has died at the age of 88.
The avant-garde painter/sculptor passed away in Barcelona, Spain on Monday (06Feb12). No further details about his death were released, but he had reportedly been in poor health for some time.
Tapies gained international fame for his abstract paintings and compositions, which included his renowned work The Sock, a large model of a sock with a hole in the heel.
His achievements were honoured in 1981 by King Juan Carlos of Spain, who awarded him the country's coveted Beaux Arts Medal.
