The industry veteran passed away from natural causes on Wednesday (07Oct15).

Allen rose to prominence as an art director and earned his first Oscar nomination for his work on Judy Garland's 1955 movie A Star Is Born. He was shortlisted again for Les Girls in 1958, before making it third time lucky in 1965, when he won gold for My Fair Lady.

He also worked as a production designer and his other film credits include Heller In Pink Tights, Back From Eternity, The Chapman Report and At Long Last Love.

Allen served as the executive director of the Art Directors Guild (ADG) for over 25 years from 1970, and later as the head of the Academy, which he led for three terms, from 1983 to 1985.

In addition to his work in the film industry, Allen was a recognised painter and his water colours have been exhibited in a number of art galleries, including the ADG Gallery in Hollywood.
