Arctic Monkeys Top 2006 Poll

British newcomers Arctic Monkeys have been voted the Band of 2006 by more than 3,000 users of music website ContactMusic.Com.

The UK-based site's music poll of the year awarded the group two top prizes - Band Of The Year and Best Album - for their debut, WHATEVER PEOPLE SAY I AM, THAT'S WHAT I'M NOT.

Other winners this year are The Killers for their comeback single WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG, Lilly Allen and Gnarls Barkley.

Contactmusic.com editor NIK KEENE says of the results, "Our 2006 poll has yielded some interesting results. The poll was opened up to our users and over 3,000 people submitted their favourites. I think 2006 was an excellent year for music and in time we will look back and see 2006 as the definitive birth of a global music scene on the internet. The major labels have tried to ignore the internet for some time now, but in 2006 they have been forced to sit up and listen."

The full list of winners is as follows:

Best Album: ARCTIC MONKEYS - WHATEVER PEOPLE SAY I AM, THAT'S WHAT I'M NOT

Best Single: THE KILLERS - WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG

Band of the Year: ARCTIC MONKEYS

Best New Act: GNARLS BARKLEY

Best Solo Act: LILLY ALLEN

Best Live Act: Muse

Best Festival: Leed/Reading Carling Weekend
