Arctic Monkeys Top 2006 Album Poll

by | 10 December 2006

Sheffield group Arctic Monkeys have triumphed in a poll choosing the best album of 2006.

Their debut effort, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, was a number one hit earlier in the year.

The album's success owed much to the popularity of their first two singles, I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor and When the Sun Goes Down, which both topped the UK singles charts.

It was announced yesterday by music newspaper NME that the Monkeys' album had been judged the best of the year by the publication's readers, closely followed by Muse's Black Holes And Revelations and Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Show Your Bones.

"We'd been up and down playing these songs and everyone had gone pretty barmy, but I didn't think that they were going to buy the CD," lead singer Alex Turner told the NMe.

"When we finished we were so proud that we'd made a record, it seemed secondary that it were a good one."

Previous winners of the NME poll in recent years have included Bloc Party's Silent Alarm, Franz Ferdinand's eponymous debut and Elephant by the White Stripes.
