Ap Chief To Staffers: "We Didn't Follow Our Guidelines"
One day after CNN chief Jeff Zucker distributed a memo to the cable news network's staffers praising them for their coverage of the Boston bombing, Associated Press executive editor Kathleen Carroll sent a memo to her own staffers addressing instead the wire service's missteps. Said Carroll: We made mistakes because we didn't follow our own very good guidelines. And in one important case, we did not move quickly enough to clearly fix that mistake. Carroll noted that AP has a rule not to report facts from a single source -- but that rule was not adhered to during its coverage. She went on: We are going to make mistakes. Our everlasting job is to make sure we make fewer of them and we don't keep making the same ones over and over again. And that when we get something wrong, we are clear about saying so, which is something we didn't do well last week.
