Renowned Japanese cartoonist Takashi Yanase has died at the age of 94.
The anime artist suffered heart failure and passed away at a Tokyo hospital on Sunday (13Oct13).
Yanase is famed for creating beloved Japanese cartoon character Anpanman, who first appeared in a picture book in 1973. He became a popular manga figure among children and later became a Tv star with his own anime series in 1988. A museum dedicated to all things Anpanman opened in Japan in 1988.
Yanase was also known for his work on another anime character, Mr. Bo, while his animated movie Yasashii Raion (Kind Lion) landed him a top prize at the 1970 Mainichi Film Awards.
