Angelina Jolie - Angelina Jolie Attends G8 Summit
Jolie in attendance as pivotal sexual violence agreement decided upon
Angelina Jolie joined the most important leaders in the world for the G8 summit, playing her part as special envoy for the UN Human Rights’ Council as the organisation sought to end rape and sexual violence in conflict.
Jolie joined British official William Hague at the summit, which is taking place at Lancaster House in London, and will also be looking at escalating situations of conflict in Syria and the threat of nuclear war from North Korea. According to Sky News, Hague likened crimes of sexual violence in conflict to the slave trade, saying rape in war zones is "one of the greatest and most persistent injustices in the world". He added: "It is almost one of the most neglected."
Yet with discussion about it on the table, and a greater effort to end such incidents agreed upon, it seems that the international body is making the right steps. Jolie commented "International political will has been sorely lacking. But today I believe that their (the victims') voices have been heard, and that we finally have some hope to offer them." The agreement that has been struck will see each member of the G8 donate money to fight crimes of sexual violence, with £23 million being put aside to fund organisations trying to bring an end to such events.
