British Producer To The Stars, Andy Johns Dies

Andy Johns, a renowned producer and recording engineer, has passed away aged just 62 years old. Johns could list some of the biggest British rock groups of all time in his list of past clients and some of the best known albums in history.

According to The Los Angeles Times, Johns passed away after suffering from a liver ailment. He started his career as a tape operator at London’s Olympic Studios, at a time when some of the greatest stars of the 1960’s were working and recording. As he once said “in those days you could go into one studio and Joe Cocker was working, and then you're working with Jimi Hendrix in Studio One, or down the corridor Eric Clapton is doing something.”

Some of his best known work was with The Rolling Stones in the 1970’s and none more so than his stint as an assistant producer for the London rockers – still going 41 years on - during recording of their landmark 1972 album Exile On Main Street. He also was involved with two of the band's follow-up albums, Goat's Head Soup and It's Only Rock 'n Roll. Others who Johns worked with during his career included the likes of Free, Jethro Tull and Humble Pie, as well as many more. He switched his style up somewhat in the late 1970’s, moving to Los Angeles to become a heavy metal producer for the likes of Van Halen and Cinderella.
