Jimi Hendrix - Andre Benjamin Records Classic Covers For Jimi Hendrix Biopic
A new Jimi Hendrix biopic, starring Outkast star Andre Benjamin as the guitar great, will not feature original material by the rocker due to a rights dispute between filmmakers and Hendrix's sister Janie.
Instead, All is By My Side will include Benjamin's covers of tracks authentic to 1966 and 1967, when the film is set.
Producers broke the news to RollingStone.com on Tuesday (03Jul12), revealing they have been unable to secure the rights to Hendrix's back catalogue from Experience Hendrix Llc, which is run by the rocker's sister.
A spokesperson for Benjamin tells WENN, "Last month, reps for Hendrix's estate issued a statement saying no project could continue if it included copyrights they own. This led some to belief there would be no music in the movie. Today's news clarifies the confusion - the film includes music that is authentic to Jimi's story in 1966 & 1967 and of course, does not infringe on anyone's copyrights.
"The storyline of All is By My Side focuses on the early days of Jimi's career, when his performances largely consisted of innovative interpretations of existing songs. These are the performances that got him discovered, blew everyone's minds and helped him become the icon he became."
In the film, Benjamin will perform Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which Hendrix famously performed in a London club with members of the Beatles in the audience, The Troggs' Wild Thing and Muddy Waters' blues classic Mannish Boy, among other hits.
The Ms. Jackson singer reworked the songs on the soundtrack with top session musicians Waddy Wachtel, Leland Sklar and Kenny Aronoff in Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, co-producer Sean MCKittrick tells RollingStone.com that Benjamin has really transformed himself into Hendrix, revealing, "Andre has been Jimi for four months now. He speaks and walks like Jimi. He dropped a ton of weight. The transformation has been amazing."
All is By My Side is currently shooting in Dublin, Ireland. The biopic is expected to debut at the Sundance Film Festival next year (Jan13).
