Harrison Ford Joins Anchorman 2: Can It Better The First Movie?
Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues begins shooting in Atlanta this month.
With news that Harrison Ford has joined the cast of Will Ferrell' s Anchorman 2, we thought we'd muse on whether or not the hugely anticipated sequel can be as good, or perhaps better, than the much-loved original, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. Ferrell and co-writer/producer Adam McKay are certainly establishing some cast for the sequel, with Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Christina Applegate and David Koechner all returning as well as newcomers Kristen Wiig and now Ford. King of comedy Judd Apatow is on-board as a producer and Paramount Pictures are presumably not short on a budget for this thing either.
If the script is up-to-scratch, Anchorman 2 can't fail. If Ferrell and McKay play on old jokes, look for cheap laughs and over-egg the parts of Wiig and Ford, then it can fail, badly. Harrison Ford - who is enjoying somewhat of a career resurgence after also signing up for Stars Wars Episode 7 - will play a legendary newscaster in the style of Tom Brokaw in the movie which begins shooting this month in Atlanta. He knows the role well, given he played respected newsman Mike Pomeroy in 2010 movie Morning Glory, produced by new Star Wars man J.J. Abrams.
It's likely that the fading Ron Burgundy will find himself doing battle with Ford's character, which could make for some hilarious moments and Ferrell and McKay should look to resist the opportunity of having the Hollywood legend making a brief cameo.
During an interview with Salon.com, McKay hinted at the plot line for Anchorman 2, saying, "I don't want to give away too much, but I'll just give a couple pieces of ideas that we've kicked around. Keep in mind we're still writing the story, but I'll say one phrase for you: custody battle. I'll give you that. I'll give you one other one: bowling for dollars."
