America's Got Talent: Whatcha Gonna Do When Burton Crane Spits Lyrics Down On You?
Among the usual array of folks who normally get through the rounds during 'America's Got Talent,' was one rather special anomaly - 77 year-old rapper Burton Crane, reports the New York Daily News. A self-styled Godfather of Rap, the veteran wordsmith claimed that he'd in fact been busting rhymes since 1972, which is a heck of a long time before Grandmaster Flash and THE SUGAR HILL GANG got going.
Fresh from making a seven year-old rapper cry, Howard Stern seemed a little more like his cocksure self, jibing that "77-year-old white men are usually the guys who do the best rap." His sarcasm looked foolish however after Burton, clad in an all-white zoot suit, dialled in a beat on a miniature Casio keyboard and got into his original song 'Whatcha Gonna Do?' - and, after a slow start, he had the crowd and judges on side cheering along!
Both Howie Mandel and Sharon Osbourne were instant in their praise of the MC, giving him two yes's. And Stern? "I hated you at first. I was gonna hit my buzzer and then all of a sudden, I find myself 'Whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do?'" Insane! With that sort of endorsement there was no way Burton wasn't going to go through - Jay Z watch out!
