'American Psycho' Heading To The Stage: Who Will Play Bateman?

'American Psycho' was once deemed too brutal to be made into a film, but over a decade on from Christian Bale and co. proving that theory wrong, the gory Bret Easton Ellis book is now set to be adapted again - this time in musical format. It'd barely be believable for anyone who read the book upon its initial release in 1991, impossible to picture how the scenes of explicit violence could possibly be replicated - or even allowed to be replicated - and yet that's seems to be exactly what we're heading for.

The UK's Independent newspaper reports that Easton Ellis was pondering bringing his central character Patrick Bateman back for a sequel earlier this month, and now Headlong Theatre Company will be bringing the original story to the stage. The company's artistic director Rupert Goold is overseeing the production - it was Goold who directed 'Enron' of course - whilst music and lyrics have been written by Duncan Sheik, a former Grammy and two-time Tony Award winner. Continuing the star-studded theme, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa who salvaged the script of 'Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark' is also involved.

The big news though hasn't yet been announced, with no one even on the rumour mill to be playing the main protagonist Bateman; with Christian Bale synonymous with the role since he appeared in the film 2000, his successor will have their work cut out.
