Amazing Spider-man Bags $140m In Debut

The Amazing SPIDER-MAN lived up to its name over the six-day Independence Day holiday, piling up $140 million domestically and more than $200 million overseas, according to studio estimates. Receipts for the franchise may not have been quite what they were for the first two installments but they far exceeded the forecasts of many veteran pundits, who reckoned that the movie would earn around $110-$115 million in North America. The East Coast summer heatwave may have prompted many to take shelter in air-conditioned theaters on more than one day -- as other films also outperformed expectations. Universal's Ted chalked up $32.6 million in its second week, falling only 40 percent and bringing its ten-day gross to $120 million. Pixar's Brave also had a modest 41-percent drop in its third week as it added $20.2 million to its gross, which now stands at $174.5 million. It also helped Disney become the first studio this year to cross the $1-billion mark at the box office. The Oliver Stone thriller Savages debuted with about $16.2 million, slightly above forecasts. Steven Soderbergh's Magic Mike rounded out the top five with around $15.6 million, putting its two-week gross at $72.7 million. But Katy Perry Part of Me debuted at the low end of expectations with $10.2 million -- about what it cost to produce -- to finish in eighth place.

The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Box Office Mojo 1. The Amazing Spider-Man, $65 million; 2. Ted, $32.6 million; 3. Brave , $20.2 million; 4. Savages, $16.2 million; 5. Magic Mike , $15.6 million; 6. Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection, $10.2 million; 7. Madagascar 3 Europe's Most Wanted, $7.7 million; 8. Katy Perry Part of Me, $7.2 million; 9. Moonrise Kingdom, $4.6 million; 10. To Rome with Love, $3.5 million.
