Allen Withdraws From Downloads Row
LILY ALLEN has backed out of the debate over illegal downloads - after she was hit by a torrent of abuse from angry music lovers.
The Smile hitmaker sparked controversy in the U.K. earlier this month (Sep09) when she called for a government crackdown on illicit file-sharing, insisting the practice will destroy the industry.
Several high-profile stars, including Sir Elton John and Muse frontman Matt Bellamy, backed Allen's stance - but she also came in for a barrage of criticism from fans.
Just days after opening up the debate, Allen has announced she no longer wants to be involved in the campaign - closing down her blog and refusing to attend a summit meeting to discuss the issue.
She writes on Twitter.com, "There is a meeting today in London where artists are meeting to discuss Piracy. My job done. I won't be attending the meeting because it's going to be a press frenzy and I don't want to detract from the issues. I'm proud of the fact that that I've been involved with this debate but I'm passing the baton on to other artists. And I've shut down the blog, the abuse was getting too much."
