B - Alicia Keys Sought Refuge With Mum During Sandy
R&B star Alicia Keys was forced to turn to her mother for refuge after losing power in her New York home and running out of food during superstorm Sandy.
The No One hitmaker admits she and her producer husband Swizz Beatz tried to make the best of things for their baby son Egypt when the electricity went out at their Manhattan residence in late October (12), but after failing to stock up on ready-to-eat produce before the former hurricane struck, Keys found herself reaching out to her mum Teresa for help.
Luckily, the Big Apple neighbourhood where the singer's mother lives was not affected by the storm, so she took her family to set up camp there.
She tells America's Essence magazine, "After the third or fourth tuna fish sandwich, and after we learned we'd be without power for a week, I called my mother, who lives Uptown. She was Ok and hadn't lost any power, so we ended up going to her house. We were pretty lucky..."
Sandy devastated the north east coast of America, leaving hundreds homeless and millions without power, and Keys and Beatz weren't the only celebrities who had to flee their homes during the storm - pals Jay Z and Beyonce relocated to a luxury hotel with their baby Blue Ivy, while Scottish actor Alan Cumming and Blondie frontwoman Debbie Harry stuck it out in their darkened homes until power could be restored.
Keys showed her gratitude to emergency workers and volunteers who helped out in the wake of the storm by performing a special concert for them in Manhattan last week (27Nov12).
