Alice In Wonderland But Not Odeon

Odeon cinemas are to boycott 'Alice in Wonderland'.

The theatre chain, which is the largest in the UK, will not show the Tim Burton-directed movie because of an argument with Disney over the length of its cinema run before it is released on DVD.

Disney wants to reduce the run from 17 weeks to 12, claiming it would help cut down on piracy on the movie - which stars Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and Anne Hathaway as the White Queen.

A spokesperson for Odeon said: "The proposed reduction in the window on a high profile 3-D title like 'Alice in Wonderland' undermines the investment made and will inevitably set a new benchmark, leading to a 12-week window becoming rapidly standard in the UK for the majority of film titles.

"The negative impact on cinema attendance that such a reduction in the window will have will threaten the continued existence of many cinemas, especially the smaller and medium-sized cinemas."

Odeon cinemas in the UK, Ireland and Italy will not show the film, but British fans will still be able to see the fantastical adventure on Cineworld and Vue screens.

Disney faces opposition worldwide to the planned reduction, with cinemas in the US, Netherlands and Belgium all voicing concerns the new reduced window would become more common.

The movie, which is inspired by the original Lewis Carroll tale, will still get a Royal premiere at London's Odeon Theatre on Thursday (25.02.10).

Disney plans to release 'Alice in Wonderland' on DVD at the end of May.
